FDA announces winners of Food Traceability Challenge
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Sept. 13 announced the 12 winners of the FDA New Era of Smarter Food Safety Low- or No-Cost Tech-Enabled Traceability Challenge.
The winning teams are: FarmTabs, Freshly, HeavyConnect, ItemChain, Kezzler, Mojix, OpsSmart, Precise, Roambee/GSM/Wiliot’s, Rfider, TagOne and Wholechain. The FDA will host a webinar on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. ET for the winning teams to present their solutions and take questions during a live Q&A session.
FDA launched the challenge on June 1 to invite stakeholders to submit tech-enabled solutions that address traceability needs and challenges faced by primary producers (such as entities involved in farming, fishing, and animal agriculture), importers, manufacturers and processers, distributors, and retailers and foodservice. From the time the challenge was launched until the submission window closed on July 30, 2021, there were 90 submissions.
The traceability initiative is part of FDA’s implementation of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety blueprint, which includes a goal to encourage food traceability technology providers to develop creative financial models that are low- to no-cost solutions, proportional to benefits derived from participating, and enabling human and animal food operations of all sizes to participate in a scalable, cost-effective way.
